Some years back whilst on a day out I found an old vacuum cleaner in an antique centre, under siege at the time from young children treating it like a climbing frame whilst their parents were studying precious bric a brac. I had never seen such a machine before and rescued it and brought it back to our home. I didnt realize it at the time but what I had found was an old Hoover Junior.from the 1930s.
This one cleaner started a steady collection of vintage machines and now I feel it is time to share them with the world. Old devices from as far back as the turn of the 20th century through to more modern machines from the 1970s , all are assembled together on this site, pieces of social history that many have forgotten about, but amazingly many still care about and collect ,from familiar names like Hoover to less familiar brands like Newmaid feel free to look around.
Enjoy the site , it will slowly expand as more oldies are discovered along the way.
Ok lets go and check out a trip into history as we view my humble little collection.
Firstly a trip through history from the 1870s to modern times
A brief history of the vacuum cleaner
In 1876 the Grand Rapids carpet sweeper became the first recognizable cleaner to be invented. . It was a carpet sweepr that had brushes connected to wheels. When the sweeper moved the brushes rotated and the floor was cleaned. The inventor of this device was one Melville Bissell. Bissell are still today producing carpet sweepers as are its main competitor in this field Ewbanks
In 1901 Hubert Cecil Booth from the UK invented the first motorized vacuum cleaner driven by a combustion engine. It was so large it had to be put on a carriage and towed by horses.
1906 saw another name enter the fray, a James Kirby . He invented the Domestic Cyclone, it was a machine that used water to collect dirt.
1908 The first motorized portable vacuum cleaner was invented by James Murray Spangler. He was a janitor from Ohio. His device had an electric fan a box and and a pilloecase to collect the dirt. Unable to market the device due to lack of funds he sold the patent to one William Henry Hoover. A name that would go on to dominate vacuum cleaning for many years.
1926 Hoover going from strength to strength invented a beaterbar for their machines. It vibrated the carpet whilst sucking to remove the dirt more effectively.
1935 The first vacuum cleaner by Scott and Fetzer to carry the famous Kirby brand name appeared in shops.
The model C was to be the first of many Kirbys sold..
1935 Hoover made their first Juniors in this year. Made specifically for the UK market from their new Perivale factory . Prior to this all Hoovers in the UK were much larger and heavier and imported from Hamilton in Canada.
1950s Hoover and other manufacturers started producing more sleeker and efficient machines. . Hoover themselves continued to sell and modernize their Juniors and Seniors whilst other companies also thrived. Electrolux and Goblin to name but two.
Modern times saw cordless portable vacuums coming into their own in the mid 1970s first introduced by Black and Decker and by 2002 robotic vacuums were also appearing. A far cry from primitive hand operated machines such as the Star and the Baby Daisies from the beginning of the 20th century.
